Direct work with children who have additional vulnerabilities training course

Course Title:
Direct work with children who have additional vulnerabilities training course
Course Code:

Finding out the child’s wishes and feelings, and using this to inform practice, is an essential part of working with children and their families. A consistent finding from public enquiries, child safeguarding practice reviews, and audits of early help services, is that this crucial work is not always carried out effectively, and in some cases has not taken place at all.

Many of the children identified as having additional or complex needs will have experienced maltreatment, adverse childhood experiences and / or trauma. These experiences, along with possible communication needs arising from e.g. special education needs, disability, or autistic spectrum disorders, will bring additional complexities that professionals working with them will need to address.

This course uses a range of methods and resources including case scenarios, small group activities, and practical work around developing bespoke techniques for communicating with children across a range of ages and vulnerabilities. This will be complemented by short taught inputs on areas such as theory, research, and messages from law, guidance, and from relevant public enquiries and child safeguarding practice reviews. The programme is highly participative, and delegates are positively encouraged to bring examples and questions from their own practice for discussion.
